Microsoft launches game assist overlay for Windows 11, allowing in-game browsing with Edge
Microsoft has publicly launched the Game Assist browser overlay for Windows 11, integrated into the Xbox Game Bar, similar to Valve's Steam overlay. Now available in the stable version of Microsoft Edge, this feature has undergone extensive beta testing.
Game Assist is designed to detect the game being played and offer contextual tips and guides. To enable it, users need to navigate to Microsoft Edge settings, search for "Game Assist," and install the widget. It can be accessed via the Game Bar using the Windows key + G shortcut. The overlay uses the same cookies, autofill, and favorites as the main Edge browser, offering a seamless user experience. Extensions such as ad blockers are compatible, allowing for browsing customization during gameplay. Future updates will introduce features like keyboard shortcuts, improved picture-in-picture, and the ability to add Edge tabs to the sidebar. Game Assist enables gamers to access guides or websites without interrupting gameplay, even for unsupported games.
Initially, the overlay supports select PC games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Marvel Rivals, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, with plans to expand the database based on user feedback. William Devereux, senior product manager for Microsoft Edge, mentioned that the feature is in preview and will be optimized based on user input.
Launching a game just so you can use a web-browser in it. I hate it. I am so glad xbox game bar isn't on my system and I'll make sure to never use Win 11 on my PC
