ByteDance's apps like CapCut, Lemon8 and MarvelSnap banned in the US following TikTok ban

Following the TikTok ban in the U.S. and its subsequent removal from app stores, other popular apps owned by ByteDance, including CapCut, Lemon8, and MARVEL SNAP, have officially suspended services in the country. This action is in compliance with the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which targets foreign-owned apps due to national security concerns.

The popular video editing tool CapCut, Lemon8, an alternative to Instagram, and the card game Marvel Snap are no longer accessible for download or use in the U.S. Users attempting to access these apps are met with messages indicating their unavailability due to the new law. These measures have even taken some of their own developers by surprise, such as Second Dinner, the creators of the Marvel Universe-based card game. It's also important to note that despite the U.S. suspension, these services remain functional in other regions, as the ban is not global.

This situation highlights the growing regulatory scrutiny of Chinese-owned tech apps in the U.S. and hints at potential impacts on other rising platforms like RedNote, a TikTok alternative that has recently gained popularity. In the meantime, we recommend checking out the alternative pages for each of these apps here on AlternativeTo, where you'll find a list of the best alternatives to each of these services.

Hasn't Trump made it available back already? "Foreign Adversary" my ass, what Donny the Conman cares about atm is when to start dumping his scamcoin, and he's already planning other grifts to best milk his presidency. More trump-sertified bibles, sneakers and shitcoins. Foreign adversary is not a term from his vocabulary.

I'm not taking sides here, but I find it quite ironic that a Chinese company would invoque Free Speech as their defense ... I mean, it's not like China is precisely a champion of free speech, now, is it?

China has blocked pretty much everything American in the country. Youtube, instagram, facebook, all Google. Even tiktok isn't available in China without a vpn, because it's a tool built and used exclusively for running pro-Chinese and pro-Russian psyops on western audiences. So the only irony here is how Tiktok still isn't banned worldwide, and how MAGA (who just yesterday were all about tariffing and sanctioning China) opposes the ban in US

It's the perfect example of how easily a centralized services can be cut off countrywide in matter on hours. It's not the first example and won't be the last. Politics, and how the First Amendment has completely silenced, aside, only decentralized services can be authoritarianism-proof. It must be a lesson for all the remaining countries that haven't known so much censorship yet.
