X launches 'X TV' smart TV app to compete with YouTube in video-first strategy
X has introduced an official smart TV app called "X TV," aimed at enhancing video consumption on the platform. This move aligns with Elon Musk's plan to make X a "video-first" platform, competing with casual video services like YouTube and TikTok, both already available on smart TVs.
Currently in beta, the X TV app is available for LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and Google TV devices. Plans are in place for further integrations, but the app is not yet available for Apple TV or the Apple App Store for tvOS. The app enables users to browse and watch videos, including livestreams, directly on their smart TVs, requiring users to sign in to their X accounts.
Previously, viewing X's video content on a TV necessitated casting from a secondary device. Despite these initiatives, many users still primarily engage with videos while scrolling through their feeds, rather than treating X as a primary video-watching platform, so it remains to be seen if the new app will shift this behavior.
