YouTube tests X-like community notes to combat misinformation with user-generated context

YouTube is testing a new "community notes" feature to provide additional context to videos, similar to X/Twitter's approach. This feature will enable viewers to create blurbs identifying misinformation or outdated content. Initially, a pilot program will be launched with selected contributors in good standing, and third-party evaluators will assess the notes' helpfulness.

The rollout will be gradual to fine-tune the feature before making it widely available. Notes will appear under videos if viewers find them broadly helpful, with viewers able to rate the notes as helpful, somewhat helpful, or unhelpful. A bridging-based algorithm will determine note ratings, aiming for consensus across diverse groups to mitigate potential abuse, addressing the significant risk of online misinformation.

This feature was previously seen during Jack Dorsey's tenure at X and expanded after Elon Musk's acquisition. The pilot will start on mobile in the US, with initial mistakes and necessary algorithm adjustments expected. A broader US rollout is anticipated in the upcoming weeks and months.
