Penpot announces beta launch of plugin system to rival Figma's capabilities
The team behind Penpot, the free and open-source alternative to Figma, has announced the upcoming beta launch of its much-anticipated plugins' system. Figma has supported plugins for several years, but Penpot, being a much newer software, has not yet had this feature.
In their announcement, the Penpot team expressed their belief that plugins will be crucial in empowering the community and enhancing Penpot as a design tool. The development of the basic system for creating plugins is well advanced, with examples available for viewing here.
Plugins for Penpot can be written using standard web technologies such as JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. They are sandboxed and executed in a separate process to prevent conflicts with Penpot features and ensure security. This beta phase will help Penpot gather feedback, identify issues, and refine the plugin system for a more user-friendly experience.
