Microsoft Teams to merge personal and work accounts into a unified app experience

Microsoft Teams is finally simplifying its several versions of Teams by merging its personal and work/school accounts into the same desktop app to switch between accounts. The upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2 update will phase out the separate Microsoft Teams (free) app, moving all users to the unified Teams platform, slated for release in April.

The new version will feature an easy-to-use account switcher in the profile section, motivated by user feedback favoring a single app for both account types. The updated Teams app will also allow users to choose an account type when joining meetings and even attend meetings without signing in. It will distinguish between personal and work account launches through separate taskbar icons, eliminating the need for multiple app installations. Enhanced notification features will clearly show the source of notifications and offer detailed actions for personal notifications.

With the new update, Microsoft is finally addressing the confusion previously caused by separate Teams apps for personal and work use, a complexity exacerbated by the initial integration of Teams in Windows 11
