Microsoft to launch a new 'File Search Companion' App for the Windows Taskbar

Microsoft is developing a new app called 'File Search Companion' for the Windows 11 taskbar, allowing quick file searches directly from the taskbar. Built as a WebView2 app, it enables one-click file searches with additional features compared to Windows Search.

The app includes filters for specific file types such as Microsoft 365 (Office) apps, aiding in efficient navigation. File Search Companion is integrated with the taskbar, providing quick access through a small pop-up window. It focuses on delivering files most relevant to users' current tasks, including recent files or files shared by others.

Currently targeted at users with work or school accounts, the app is not available for personal Microsoft accounts. Although Microsoft has not officially announced the app, it is already available for download, allowing eligible users to explore its features through the Microsoft 365 Companion app.

I notice the picture says "find cloud files and take action faster". So basically another way for Microsoft to annoy users by pushing their specific services and indirectly get them to give up access to personal files because the AI is not local, but on the cloud. What a wealth of additional data they're going to gather.
