X/Twitter adds official passkey support for iOS users in the U.S.
In a bid to enhance account security, X/Twitter has introduced Passkeys support for iOS users in the U.S. (for now), a replacement to its previously discontinued SMS two-factor authentication (2FA) for non-premium members.
Until now, users were advised to switch to alternative two-factor authentication (2FA) methods using tools like 1Password, Bitwarden, or Proton Pass. Now, with official passkey support, iOS users simply download the latest app version, go to settings, privacy, then security, and activate passkey under additional password protection. Premium subscribers can still use SMS 2FA, although it is not the most secure option.
Passkeys is a collaborative effort by the FIDO Alliance that allows users to log in via secure methods such as facial recognition or biometrics, eliminating the need for traditional passwords. Since 2023, we have seen significant adoption of this technology by major companies like Google, Apple, WhatsApp, or TikTok, with X being the most recent player to join the trend.
