Windows updates the Snipping Tool and Notepad app with improved screen recording integration and auto-save
Windows has updated its Snipping Tool and Windows Notepad app to improve user experience with several new features.
The updated Snipping Tool (version 11.2307.44.0) now has a combined capture bar that allows easy transition between screenshots and screen recordings. Users can access this feature through Print Screen or Win + Shift + S shortcuts, while Win + Shift + R opens the capture bar for recording. The update also supports recording PC audio and voice overs, and allows users to configure default audio recording settings (so perhaps it can work as a 'light alternative' to Loom, although, of course, with fewer features). Users with multiple recording devices can also select their preferred device. A known issue of a pop-up dialog appearing when taking a screenshot has been addressed with the recommended solution to select "Snipping Tool."
The Notepad app (version 11.2307.22.0) now automatically saves the session state, enabling users to close the app and resume where they left off without interrupting dialogs (similar to Visual Studio Code). The update also restores previously open tabs and unsaved content. Users who prefer to start with a clean slate each time they open Notepad can disable the session state saving feature in app settings. Feedback can be provided in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps Notepad.
These updates are gradually being introduced to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, and the availability may vary as the feedback is reviewed and adjustments are made for a wider release.
