Grammarly to discontinue Text Editor SDK, shifts focus to core product and AI integration

Grammarly has announced that it will discontinue its Text Editor SDK, which allows developers to integrate its automated editing features into their applications. The discontinuation will be effective from January 10th, 2024, making the functionality inoperative in any application currently using it. Additionally, Grammarly for Developers will not be accepting new registrations. Those who recently registered and are considering a Text Editor SDK integration have until July 26, 2023, to create a new app.

The decision is a strategic move by Grammarly to reallocate its internal engineering resources and focus on its core product. The company aims to incorporate AI into its tool to compete with emerging AI tools such as ChatGPT. Drew Endick, senior manager for platform partners at Grammarly, highlighted the company's growing demand from enterprises and their commitment to fulfilling these needs.

Developers will need to adjust their applications to remove the SDK functionality, which will be available only to paying Grammarly customers after discontinuation. Grammarly acknowledges the potential disappointment among developers and promises support during the removal process. The company also confirms that no new features or functionality will be added to the SDK before its shutdown, urging developers to plan its removal from their applications.

i was always wondering what would happen to Grammarly after the AI wave. They were always very expensive and now that there are so many good alternatives, this was inevitable.
