Blizzard is finally starting to release some of its games on Steam, starting with Overwatch 2
Blizzard recently announced plans to expand its game offerings on the popular PC platform, Steam, while maintaining support for its own platform, Battle.net. The first game to make this transition is Overwatch 2, which is set to release on August 10th. This release coincides with the Overwatch 2: Invasion event, introducing highly anticipated PvE story missions.
To play the game on Steam, users must link their Overwatch 2 game to a Battle.net account, allowing them to utilize all of Steam's features, such as friends lists and achievements. This move to Steam is part of Blizzard's wider strategy to simplify the process for players to discover and play their games globally. While Overwatch 2 is the first game to move to Steam, Blizzard plans to transition more titles in the future. This possibility gains strength when we consider that the process of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard seems to be nearing completion in a few weeks, and Microsoft has been releasing all its games on Valve's platform on day one for quite some time.
By launching popular content on a new platform, Blizzard aims to boost player numbers and rekindle interest in Overwatch 2. The move to Steam may also help Blizzard reach a broader audience and expand its player base.
