WhatsApp to add Screen Sharing for video calls

WhatsApp is set to enhance its video call feature with the introduction of screen sharing support, according to recent reports from WaBetaInfo. This new feature will allow users to mirror their phone's screen during a video call on the popular messaging app. The addition of screen sharing will prove particularly beneficial when discussing crucial slides or documents, as it will enable seamless collaboration in real-time. It can also users the opportunity to remotely assist their friends or family with any phone-related issues they may encounter 😉

The first indications of this exciting feature were spotted in the WhatsApp beta release for Android v2.23.11.19. Although other messaging platforms such as Telegram, FaceTime, Google Meet or even Skype (yep, still alive) have already incorporated screen sharing options, WhatsApp's foray into this area is highly anticipated. However, there are still some details to be determined, such as the system requirements for using screen sharing during group video calls and its compatibility with older Android devices.

It is worth noting that WhatsApp's screen sharing is unlikely to display content from apps that have implemented the FLAG_Secure feature. This precaution is in place to prioritize security and privacy, preventing unauthorized sharing of sensitive information. Apps that fall under this category include password managers and streaming platforms such as Netflix, which rely on FLAG_Secure to safeguard their content from potential breaches.

In addition to the screen sharing feature, the latest WhatsApp beta release also includes subtle changes to the order of the bottom navigation bar. This suggests that the layout is currently being finalized and will be rolled out to the public in the coming weeks.
