YouTube is reportedly slowing-down Firefox load times following crackdown on ad-blockers
Reports are emerging of a five-second delay experienced by users when loading YouTube videos in non-Chrome browsers, specifically Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge, following YouTube's recent crackdown on ad-blockers.
Interestingly, the delay disappears when users modify their user agent to Chrome, suggesting a possible browser-related issue. However, since the delay isn't universal, it may also be related to specific user accounts.
Google has responded to the issue, stating that, “To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube, we’ve launched an effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience. Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using.”
Given that both Firefox and Edge have built-in ad and tracking blockers, it is feasible that the users who reported the delay had these features enabled, or Google may have mistakenly identified these features as active when they were not.
Interestingly, the problem does not appear when using the uBlock Origin extension. Therefore, users experiencing the delay on Firefox who do not wish to use a user agent switcher workaround, could consider using this extension.

At a point I had 900+ subscriptions. The way they imho messed-up with this ad-blockers witch hunt move, had me remove all those 900 subs and leave somewhere around 60. People that post rarely or/and creators that content I think is really worth it. I'm using DuckDuckGo for YouTube now, but having to browsers open isn't a problem on a dual monitor setup at all. The interesting thing is how much I reduced watching the YT vids (at certain times I probably was watching ~20 vids a day. Yes most in the background while I do other stuff, but still kinda scary when I think about it) Anyway I am choosing to look at it as a positive, I'll reduce my exposure/time spent on vids, pursue other browsers or alternatives ( gonna dig into PeerTube more and more! ). What I essentially think will happen, however - is this, might turn as a negative for creators in the long run.
As someone who only watches 30~50 videos a year off YouTube, mostly from creators who don't even have ads enabled, but just post there because it's free and easy to share links to, and people might stumble on it by accident while searching there. I really wished one of the decentralized/distributed systems would get popular and go main stream. Since I think a lot of the best content on YouTube is really only there because it's free to post and a link they can share that people won't think twice about clicking it because they know youtube. Most people I talk to nowadays who make the stuff I'm the most interested in at least and do it for a living tell me Google ruined the ad revenue share years ago, so the only way they stay afloat is direct in video sponsors.
I think one of the scariest thing to normal people about "decentralized/distributed" is that means "no moderation" to them. Of course, since YouTube can't seem to keep up on their moderation either... I'm starting to feel like it's a moot point. If you actually wanted to avoid specific content, you'd probably be better served by a transparent community maintained filter list/subscription than a big companies desire to pay as few moderators as legally possible.
I've experienced this for a long time (at least a year if I had to guess) and every time I Googled the symptoms, I never could find a solid answer.
I'm happy to see others are backing up those claims, but I'm sad to see this is an actual thing.
Correction. It's NOT a browser-related issue. It's a GOOGLE related issue. And, it's kind of hard to imagine anyone using using Firefox not using uBlock Origin.
