Early public alpha of innovative open-source file management Spacedrive is finally out!
The early public alpha version of the new and innovate open source cross-platform file manager, Spacedrive, is finally available after a 15-month development period, following its successful open-sourcing on GitHub last year.
Spacedrive is available on Windows, Linux, macOS and as a Docker container. The platform allows users to access metadata and preview/explore images, videos, and documentst through a traditional Explorer with 4 views: Icons, List, Columns, and Media. The software also includes Quick View for in-app viewing of images, videos, text files, code with syntax highlighting, and PDFs (similar to Spotlight), and Tags that can be created and assigned to files for easy browsing. Other features include Library Statistics and Search features, Job Management and Themes, and an automatic update installer.
The app provides a basic onboarding process for new users to create Libraries and switch between them. The software's file management features include an Indexer for monitoring changes and performing light re-scans, and an Identifier for generating checksums and categorizing files into Objects. Rules can be defined to instruct the indexer to ignore specific files or folders.
The initial release still lacks certain features, such as the ability to connect multiple nodes, multi-select functionality, cloud support, and additional explorer tools, which will be added in future releases. However, for now, Spacedrive positions itself as an interesting alternative to traditional file managers.
oh nice, finally out
Can't wait to try it !
I have been waiting a year for this!
It looks great! It still has several bugs, and it's evident that it's an alpha version, but it shows a lot of promise.
