Facebook Messenger's dark mode on Android and iOS is unlocked with a moon emoji

Written about 1 year ago by IanDorfman

The much requested dark mode for Facebook's Messenger instant messaging service is finally publicly available, with users able to unlock it in settings by messaging anyone the crescent moon emoji 🌙.

Though first covered by news outlets like Android Police, Facebook today put out an official news release about the feature's secret launch. In it, Small Facebook Messenger iconFacebook Messenger Project Manager Bridget Pujals described this hidden way to unlock support for a dark theme on the popular messaging service as "a hidden, limited-time only experience."

That is not to say, however, that the app's dark mode is temporary. It's a permanent addition to the service. According to the news post, dark mode "will be fully rolled out in settings in the coming weeks" on Android and iOS. Once that is done, it can be accessed by everyone who uses Messenger with no additional steps.
