Facebook has announced the release of Threads, its new camera-focused messaging app for Instagram. Different from the existing Instagram app, Threads focuses on keeping you connected throughout the day with your close friends, providing a quick path to status updates or sharing photos, videos and Stories. The app is available now on the App Store and Play Store.

Similar to several Facebook endeavors from recent years, the new app appears to take queues from competing messaging app Small Snapchat iconSnapchat, likewise focusing on creating content as an entry point. The company has met with great success in the past through cloning of Snapchat features such as Stories. Meanwhile, Snapchat's parent company Snap reportedly took a dive in stock price as low as 7% when Threads was announced.

Many in the tech world have expressed concerns with the new app surrounding Facebook's privacy practices. Considering the app potentially utilizes device details like location and battery level, privacy is especially important. The company says the app is designed with privacy in mind. How that pans out practically remains to be seen.
