500px photo community website shuts down marketplace
Users of the 500px Marketplace for Creative Commons-licensed royalty free stock photography will now need to use alternatives.
According to the FAQ posted on 500x's support page, 500px Marketplace, which enabled customers to purchase royalty-free stock photography, as well as allow users upload Creative Commons licensed photographs, has now been discontinued.
At this point, the only way to upload photos for free of charge distribution would be to have them distributed through Getty Images or Visual China Group.
According to Jason Scott of the Internet Archive, over a million photos were at risk of being removed without proper archival. He soon thereafter set up an ArchiveTeam page for group archival of the content, and also uploading the results to the Internet Archive.
Alternatives that continue to support Creative Commons licensed photos include Pexels, Wikimedia Commons, Flickr, and Pexels.
