Google is banning cryptocurrency mining from Chrome Web Store apps
Google has announced that it has updated its Chrome Web Store policy in order to implement a ban on hidden cryptocurrency background mining scripts. The company cited the fact that these background mining scripts will oftentimes consume a significant amount of a user's CPU resources, as well as consume a lot of power, as the motivation for this ban.
In the announcement blog post on the Chromium blog, Google detailed that, effective immediately, the Chrome Web Store will no longer accept extensions that mine cryptocurrency in the background. On top of this, existing extensions on the Web Store that continue to mine cryptocurrency will be delisted in late June.
