Old dedicated video game platforms from childhood can often be disproportionately expensive for what is oftentimes just a desire for a nostalgic escape from the moment. That’s where emulation comes into play. From multi-system emulation systems such as RetroArch to specialized and high performance emulators such as higan, there are many modern methods to play the games of your childhood without having to break the bank in order to get old hardware.

- PSX emulator on Windows Mobile or Windows Phone Device and Android. The name means First PlayStation Emulator.
- Jnes is a NES emulator for win32 platforms that uses DirectX for its hardware interface. Its emulation capabilities include graphics, sound, input devices, and emulating quite a few memory mapping boards found in most USA games and a few popular japanese ones.
- Z26 is one of the best emulators for the Atari 2600. The author reports that the graphics part of the emulator is nearing perfection to a point that there's little more to fix.
- Nintendulator is an open source Win32 NES emulator written in C++ (plus some assembly optimization).
- Ages is a SEGA Genesis, SEGA 32X, and Sega CD emulator. Compare it to your favorite SEGA Genesis emulator and send your thoughts to the authors. This emulator has full sound, and has been built from scratch.

- Apollo is a N64 emulator for Windows by Azimer. Also has a version of the HLE Audio plugin but no progress has been published in several years. In this year of idle activity in the N64 scene Azimer promises soon "something out the door".

- Chankast is a open source Sega Dreamcast emulator for x86 platforms. It was the first Dreamcast emulator to successfully run commercial games.
