What is ZSvirt?

?Project Background?

As Broadcom adjusts its licensing model following the acquisition of VMware, a growing number of organizations are reevaluating their virtualization strategies around TCO, seeking greater flexibility, transparency, and control over how they manage their workloads.

ZSvirt, initiated by infrastructure vendor ZStack, officially announced its open-source release under the GPL 3.0 license on August 12, 2026.

?Project Overview?

ZSvirt is an enterprise-grade lightweight virtualization platform built for scalable enterprise infrastructure, delivering automation capabilities and achieving zero vendor lock-in.

As a lightweight, scalable platform, it is designed to give teams full autonomous control over their infrastructure—from small-scale deployments to hyperscale environments—without vendor lock-in. Unlike solutions that require teams to adopt entirely new operational paradigms, ZSvirt preserves familiar VM-centric workflows at the cluster, host, VM, storage, and network levels, while giving users the flexibility to evaluate, deploy, and actively participate in the platform's evolution.

?Core Highlights?

Massive virtualization scale: A single control plane can manage over 10,000 hosts, with a single VM supporting up to 768 vCPUs.

Seamless VMware migration: 100% agentless migration with the built-in ZMigrate toolset, which operates entirely at the virtualization layer, supporting full-disk block replication and background incremental synchronization—cutover can be completed in as little as 5 minutes.

Built-in security: Native VM SecureBoot, vTPM 2.0, VM encryption, along with security group micro-segmentation and immutable audit logs.

Open integration: Provides 2,000+ production-ready RESTful/OpenAPI endpoints, with native support for Terraform Provider and SDKs for Go, Python, and Java.

?Production-Proven?

ZSvirt shares the same enterprise-grade engine as ZSphere, a core technology previously validated across over 1,000 production environments—including VMware replacement scenarios—spanning more than a dozen industries such as finance, healthcare, education, manufacturing, transportation, and more. Today, ZStack is opening this engine to the community under the GPL 3.0 license, enabling organizations of all types to migrate and upgrade their virtualization platforms without disrupting ongoing operations.
