Allows you to use Windows apps on Linux

Where would we be without this? Developers of mainstream software refuse (or severely limit) support for Linux. But WINE gives us a way to use Windows software. Yes, it's a little complicated to setup, but more recent distros improve the experience with other software that uses it (like PlayOnLinux, Proton).

Wine isn't perfect, but it can do quite a bit. It's a translation layer, not a virtual machine, so you don't have to boot up an entire Windows VM inside your host system (or dual-boot) just to run one application, and you don't have an entire emulated system taking up memory and processor power.

For Steam games it's usually better to run the native Steam client and let it run the game through Proton (which is built on Wine). For other apps, I like to use CrossOver, which is also built on Wine but has much better installation tools than the base version.

Almost impossible to install. Tried many times from different places. The furthest it gets is appearing in installed extensions. But you can't run it, nothing opens it. Correction: it installs but won't do anything.

First. Fork Wine! Save the planet! incompetent and toxic developers, project leaders. Incompetent and toxic admins at Wine's forums who blame you for no reason and suppress discussion.

The only "argument" they know is I can ban you: https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=36872 https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=36888

Don't wait!!! Call the police. Don't speak to them!

Secondly. Don't expect smart things from Wine, like increasing log verbosity after a crash. See my comment about the lack of session logs...

You are insane. You linked forum posts where you make an idiot from yourself, spam the forum and waste developers time for no reason. Every post of yours is written with such an attitude you are making me vomit.

What is Wine?

Wine is a free, open source application for running Windows software on operating systems that are normally not supported. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows.

Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.
