What is WinDirStat?
WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool, inspired by
KDirStat .
WinDirStat is a program that allows you to find drive space hogs at a glance. It achieves that by displaying a drive, drives or directories in a treemap that assigns bigger areas to bigger files and directories. Making those areas visually separate by coloring and other means allows you to see literally at a glance what the space hogs are and where to dig deeper.
The directory tree is simultaneously shown as a tree list and as a treemap. One can effortlessly gain an impression of the proportions on the drive(s).
Major features
- Three views: Directory Tree, Treemap, and Extension
- Duplicate file detection
- Built-in cleanup actions including Open, Delete, Show Properties
- User-defined cleanup actions (command line based)

Resumed in 2018
There is active development in 2025. And they have improved dramatically reducing the running time.
I came here to find an alternative of the nice GNOME Disk Usage Analyzer (Baobab) for Windows systems. WinDirStat is open source but it's a million times more messy than SpaceSniffer.
SpaceSniffer is portable, and it shows the folders where the files are in the graph! It's simpler to use and visualize your disk in the way you organized it: in folders. You can visually explore your disk with single or double-clicking the folders.
Looks like the same thing but not open source. I'd stay away.
Without a competent open source alternative SpaceSniffer will be my option. I've been using it for a long time without issues.
I wouldn't trust you to be capable of identifying issues tbh
Yeah, sure, my whole HDD is being uploaded to terrorists, definitely. </irony>
fast, clear clickable graphics, easy to use, very useful
Love all the features this app offers. Super easy to visualize your storage at a glance. I wish it was also ported to Linux as well, then I might consider switching from ncdu to this instead
Very useful tool. See what is consuming your drive space.
On the opposite end of the spectrum from KDE's equivalent offering is this gem -- their web page exists, but only just about.
When I read that WinDirStat supports all versions of Windows from 95 onwards, I leapt for joy, which was but short-lived!
The Windows' installable files have DISAPPEARED from, both, SourceForge, and it's mirror. What a sad experience!

An excellent tool to have when your looking to cleanup your pc. Find out which directories are the biggest & which files are as well. The square map at the bottom is easy to understand click to hop right to the location. This app is only missing a dark mode!
