Fuck Jimmy Wales.
Fuck Perkins Miller.
It's a nice platform, but not excellent. I enjoyed working on a project there and I have dedicated a lot of my time to update a 3yr gap on it. But it's a shame you lose activity count when you take a break (like a holiday or maybe something painful), you have to explain yourself why were you absent for a number of days as it's an interrogation. They do not like members to be rude to them, but their answers and attitude are quite pertinent and behave as if your existence depend on them. And regarding the admin rights, it's annoying that you only receive temporary ones and they expire after 30 days, forcing you to go through the same process of requesting an extension every month. Not to mention there is no security in place. While trying to encourage a friendly community (which seems a bit toxic in some notable cases), you are not allowed to lock the content and allow anyone to edit it. Your hard work can go down the drain if someone decides to troll the page. I have worked so hard and was very much disappointed by all these turn offs. I am still on a waiting list for extension and was scrutinized for locking the content and pointed out I have broken the community rules.
Fandom is one of the worst things to come out of the internet in the past ten years.
Pro: the most extensive database of computer games, comics, movies and books. This is the work of the volunteers. Cons: non-disabled ads, including video, occupying more than half of the screen on mobile devices. This is the work of the resource owners.
I would prefer not giving it such a low rating but its aggressive and obnoxious advertising makes the site a serious pain to browse for users without accounts. This is especially true for mobile users. Also... Often articles will include an autoplaying Fandom-provided video that sticks to the screen as you scroll down.
Otherwise, the site is a very good source for information on a wide variety of (mostly) fictional content.
I would consider it highly preferable if wikis on Fandom would transfer to Miraheze if feasible. Miraheze has neither ads nor much of any editorial interference. Wikis can also choose their own licensing on Miraheze, whereas on Fandom is almost all under CC-BY-SA.
Referata is very similar to Wikipedia. It also uses MediaWiki, equal as Wikipedia does. I do not like Wikia, because it is full with ads, whereas Referata is free of ads. It is also very easy to copy text from Wikipedia to Referata and vice versa, because both use the same syntax.
