TreadLightlyAI is an AI chat assistant built as a thinking tool, for people who want AI's usefulness without ignoring what it costs: energy, money and societal risk.
Every conversation runs through a thinking mode: Research, Write, Teach, Plan, Audit, Challenge, or a balanced general mode. Each is designed to sharpen your reasoning rather than just hand back fast answers, and Challenge mode questions your assumptions instead of agreeing with you.
The Free, Starter and Builder tiers run only open-weight models (Gemma 4 31B and GPT-OSS 120B), hosted in Switzerland and the EU on renewable energy. The Advanced tier adds Anthropic's Claude Haiku and Sonnet. Every reply shows its energy use, measured where the provider reports it and estimated where it doesn't, with the method published.
Also included: projects that group chats, files and custom instructions; saved notes you can bring back into a chat; web search; inline diagrams; and document uploads used as context.
10% of revenue goes to the Future of Life Institute for AI safety work, and 1.5% to permanent carbon removal through Stripe Climate. There is a free tier; paid tiers start at $3 a month with a 7-day trial.
