What is TongueType?

TongueType is a menu bar dictation app for Apple Silicon Macs that runs OpenAI's Whisper model entirely on-device via the Neural Engine. Audio never leaves the Mac: there are no servers, no account, and no analytics, and it works offline once the model is downloaded.

Hold a configurable hotkey (any modifier key, the Globe key, or F1–F15), speak, and release to insert the transcription wherever the cursor is, or send it to the clipboard instead. A double-tap latch enables hands-free dictation, spoken phrases like "scratch that" discard a take, and smart insertion matches the capitalization and spacing of the surrounding text when resuming mid-sentence. Post-processing rules turn spoken phrases like "new line" or "at sign" into symbols, text, or entire phrases, and are fully editable.

It also transcribes audio and video files (WAV, MP3, M4A, FLAC, MOV, MP4, and more) by drag-and-drop. Supports 11 languages plus auto-detect. The free tier includes every feature with 30 minutes of live dictation per month; Pro is a one-time purchase ($19.99, up to 5 Macs) that removes the limits. Requires macOS 14+ on Apple Silicon.
