What is Simple Feed Reader?

Simple Feed Reader is a free, open-source (MIT) web-based RSS and Atom reader that you host yourself — for one person, a household, or a team. It brings your feeds together in three layouts: a magazine-style card grid, a compact list, and a two-pane view with a draggable split that shows the article beside the entry list.

Its reader view extracts the full article text and plays images, audio, and video — including streaming video — inline, so you rarely need to leave the app. You can switch to the feed's own version or open the original page at any time, and when an article is paywalled the reader tells you the text is only the free preview.

Add a feed by its address, or just paste a website's URL and let the app find the feed for you. Preview any feed before you subscribe, import and export OPML, and group feeds with colored, icon-tagged tags. Read/unread tracking, favorites, a separate "keep" list, full-text search with saved searches (each with its own unread count), and optional daily or weekly email digests cover everyday reading. Feed health — active, erroring, or gone — is visible in the settings, with a plain-language explanation and one-click retry.

An optional "For You" mode ranks your unread articles from what you read, favorite, and keep. You choose the provider: any OpenAI-compatible API works, including local models via Ollama or LM Studio, so your data can stay on your own machine. A cost overview tracks token usage and spend.

Sign in with email and password, with Google or Apple, or with a passkey. New-account email verification and admin approval are optional per instance. The interface has light and dark themes and works well on mobile, with a swipe-out sidebar and pull-to-refresh. Available in English and German. Runs on Docker with a single install command.
