ShortList is a free, open-source job application tracker that keeps itself up to date. Instead of maintaining a spreadsheet by hand, you forward your job emails to ShortList with a simple Gmail filter, and it reads them for you: application confirmations create new entries automatically, while "application viewed" and rejection emails update the status of the right application.
A Chrome extension lets you save any job posting in one click, including the full job description, so it's still available when the posting disappears before your interview. It can also detect when you've submitted an application, and optionally read your "My applications" page on supported portals (LinkedIn and Naukri, with more planned), proposing status changes for you to review. On your phone, ShortList installs as an app and lets you share jobs straight from the LinkedIn or Naukri apps.
ShortList also remembers what you told each company in screening questions (expected salary, notice period, years of experience), shows which applications need a follow-up, and suggests marking silent applications as ghosted.
Every automatic change appears on a timeline with its source (email, extension, portal or manual), uncertain changes wait in a review inbox, and anything can be undone.
Optional AI features, using your own API key, generate interview prep packs from the saved job description and your resume, draft follow-up messages, and answer questions about your job search. Everything works without AI.
ShortList is self-hostable with Docker Compose, encrypts sensitive fields like salary and email excerpts, and lets you switch every feature on or off. It's designed with Indian job seekers in mind (LPA salaries, notice periods, Naukri) but works for anyone, anywhere.
