This is one of my favorite apps - simply let's you block sites and there is no going back before you time you specify is up!

One of the best productivity apps ever..!

Great piece of software! It's very easy to use and works like a charm, without backdoors prone to self-sabotage.

I use Windows at work, but unfortunately SelfControl is only compatible with macOS:

Wirecutter recommends SelfControl, and it runs on Mac, but it does not run on iPhone.

Website blocking in SelfControl expires when the timer runs out.

SelfControl can block websites –– but not apps.

It's simple to use, looks clean and is OpenSource. It does what it should do, blocking you from accessing the web pages you know will make you waste time. No issues - recommendable.

Hi,

I use SelfControl very often and I'm very satisfied with it in general. But for some reason it doesn't block facebook completely. Everything in facebook works just fine except the photoes and videos in the feed, and to be honest FB is the page that steals most of my time..

What can I do about this. Is there some sneaky way to make it also block facebook, or can I download another app, that (in cooperation with Selfcontrol)can make Facebook inoperable..

I've had the same problem. Two things that help are:

  1. Only use the Blacklist option.

  2. If you still see Facebook partially loading, reload the web page. In my experience, I only need to reload once, afterwards Facebook is blocked completely.

Reload the web page or try cleaning your browser's cache. Always take a look at the FAQ if you have any issues: https://github.com/SelfControlApp/selfcontrol/wiki/FAQ#q-i-blocked-a-website-with-selfcontrol-but-i-can-still-access-the-site-what-do-i-do

What is SelfControl?

SelfControl is a free and open-source application for Mac OS X that lets you block your own access to distracting websites, your mail servers, or anything else on the Internet. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blacklist, and click "Start." Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites--even if you restart your computer or delete the application.
