What is Scrite?
Scrite is an open-source screenwriting application based in Bengaluru, India. Unlike most screenwriting tools designed primarily for English, Scrite natively supports Indian language screenwriting; at launch it supported 11 Indian languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi, allowing writers to compose scripts entirely in their native language. In 2026, support was extended to major international languages.
Scrite is designed to be intuitive and accessible for both first-time and professional screenwriters, with a clean interface that reduces the learning curve typically associated with screenwriting software. It supports standard screenplay formatting including scene headings, action lines, dialogue, and transitions. Beyond formatting, Scrite includes scene structuring and story planning tools, allowing writers to outline, organise, and navigate their screenplay within the same application.
Scrite functions as an offline desktop application requiring no cloud connection, making it suitable for writers anywhere, regardless of internet access.
It is an affordable alternative to Final Draft, Celtx, and Fade In.
First released as a beta in 2020, Scrite reached version 1.0 in 2025. It operates on a freemium model with a 30-day free trial followed by subscription options.
