Sablate is a desktop subtitling application for Windows and macOS that performs every step locally: transcription, translation, editing and rendering.
Transcription uses faster-whisper with four quality tiers - Fast, Balanced, Accurate and Best - covering Whisper's full set of 100 source languages plus automatic detection. On Windows, a supported NVIDIA GPU is used automatically; the CUDA runtime is downloaded on first GPU use rather than bundled, and the application falls back to the CPU when no supported GPU is present.
Translation is applied to an existing transcript as an additional layer rather than as a new job, so all languages share the same cue timings. Argos Translate runs fully offline. DeepL, OpenAI and Claude are available if the user supplies their own API key; the application states on screen when data would leave the machine.
The editor shows the video, the transcript and a style panel side by side, and supports timeline drag retiming, cue splitting and merging, find and replace, a term glossary, a reading-speed (CPS) warning, and the import of existing .srt and .vtt files. Thirteen caption presets are included, including a word-by-word karaoke sweep.
Output formats are .srt, .vtt, .txt, .ass, a soft-subtitled .mkv carrying one track per language, and an .mp4 with the subtitles burned in by libass at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1.
The free plan is permanent and requires no account: videos up to 10 minutes, three transcription jobs a month, the Fast and Balanced models and one offline translation layer. Pro, a one-time $29 licence or $5.99 a month, removes the length and job limits and unlocks the remaining models, formats and batch processing.
