ReStart is a free, open-source Start menu alternative for Windows 10 and Windows 11, inspired by the full-screen Start experience in Windows 10.
Arrange app shortcuts, files and folders using four tile sizes, movable groups and expandable tile folders. Tiles can also be placed independently. Drag items directly or select multiple tiles to move together, with layout locks, keyboard editing and undo/redo.
Create custom live tiles with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, including SVG and Canvas. The built-in Tile Studio offers syntax highlighting, document formatting, offline sample data and previews for all four tile sizes. Nineteen editable examples include clocks, system monitors, photo slideshows, weather, RSS headlines and dashboards. Tiles can use explicitly configured Web APIs, RSS/Atom feeds and local JSON data.
Other features include:
- App search, with optional Windows settings and indexed local filename results.
- Pinning apps, files, folders, shortcuts and websites.
- Optional Windows-key and taskbar Start-button integration, a tray menu and a Ctrl+Alt+Space shortcut.
- Light, dark and system themes, custom colors, desktop wallpaper or a separate background image.
- Layout import/export and an interface available in eight languages.
Portable ZIP packages are available for x64 and ARM64, with no separate .NET installation required. HTML live tiles require Microsoft WebView2 Runtime. Settings and installed tile packages are stored in the Windows user profile.
ReStart runs as a separate application without patching Explorer. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with Microsoft.
