What is readbox?
readbox is a privacy-focused read-it-later PWA available in both English and Japanese, built for users migrating from Pocket (Mozilla shut down Pocket in July 2025).
What makes it different:
- Full English UI (verify at https://readbox.dev-tools-hub.xyz/en) and Japanese UI (at https://readbox.dev-tools-hub.xyz/) — language switcher in the header, plus automatic detection from browser Accept-Language
- Pocket CSV import — handles both 5-column legacy and 6-column new formats, up to 5,000 articles per batch
- Article body stays on your device. Extracted HTML is stored in the browser's IndexedDB only, never persistently kept in the server database. Only metadata (URL, title, tags, read status) syncs to the server.
- Fixed pricing without FX swings: USD 3/month (EN locale) or JPY 450/month (JP locale), annual plans 17% off. Free plan covers up to 100 saved articles.
- Works as a PWA on iOS Safari 16.4+, Android Chrome, and desktop browsers. No app store install required.
Features:
- Article extraction via Jina Reader (clean HTML, no server-side DOM library required)
- Light / dark / sepia reader themes
- Adjustable font size (13-22px) and line height (1.5-2.2)
- Tags, favorites, archive, read-progress tracking
- Bookmarklet for one-tap save from any browser
- Offline reading via Service Worker cache
Built by an indie developer after Pocket's shutdown. Privacy-conscious by design: no analytics on article content, no ads, no tracking pixels.
Best fit for:
- Pocket refugees looking for a clean read-it-later replacement
- Privacy-conscious users who want article bodies stored on their device, not on a company's database
- Users who prefer fixed local-currency pricing over FX-variable USD subscriptions
- People who want a PWA without app store install friction
