What is ProjectEngine?

ProjectEngine is an open-source project scheduling and project controls engine built entirely in Microsoft Excel and VBA.

It is designed for environments where dedicated project management software such as Microsoft Project is unavailable, restricted or simply unnecessary, while still providing a structured scheduling engine beyond a traditional spreadsheet.

ProjectEngine includes dependency-driven scheduling, WBS hierarchy management, FS/SS/FF relationships with lag, critical path and longest path analytics, total and free float calculations, baseline and forecast handling, live simulation, interactive Gantt updates, milestones, summary tasks and local drag/resize workflows.

The scheduling core works mainly from indexed in-memory structures rather than relying on worksheet formulas for calculation. Excel is primarily used as the user interface, visualization layer and persistence format.

The project is actively developed with a strong focus on robustness, scalability and performance on larger schedules, while remaining usable as a standalone Excel workbook without requiring Microsoft Project, Access, SQL Server or additional licensed software.

ProjectEngine is free and open source.
