What is PrivateTranscribe?

PrivateTranscribe is a Windows dictation app. You press a global hotkey, talk, and the finished text is pasted where your cursor already is. Any app, any editor, any browser, any chat, any IDE.

Transcription runs on local Whisper by default, so the raw recording stays on your PC while it is turned into text. Cloud transcription is available but optional and off by default. Every Whisper model is included, CUDA acceleration works on compatible NVIDIA GPUs, and Whisper auto-detects 99 languages.

It is free and open source under the GPL-3.0. There is no account, no word limit and nothing to buy. The code is on GitHub at github.com/PrivateTranscribe/PrivateTranscribe.

We have been building it since February 2026, because every other dictation tool stopped at "press key, get text". So it does the things around dictation too. It lowers the volume of everything else on your PC while you dictate, and holds your call app's push-to-mute key so nobody on Discord hears you. You can teach it your names and jargon. In beta, it can also clean up a dictation with a local model before pasting it.

It also reads back. Select text anywhere, press the hotkey, and it is spoken in a voice that runs on your machine.
