What is Plainhand?

Plainhand is a prose editor for writers who want their work to read like a person wrote it. Paste in a draft and it highlights the patterns that make writing feel flat or mechanical: runs of same-length sentences, repeated sentence openers, "not this, but that" constructions, stock phrases, overused em dashes, and filter words. Each highlight comes with a short note explaining why it might read poorly. Plainhand never rewrites your text; you decide what to change.

The pattern checks are free, unlimited, and run entirely in your browser, so your writing isn't uploaded anywhere and no account is needed. Fiction and nonfiction modes adjust which checks apply.

For a closer read, Deep read uses AI to give editorial notes suited to what you're writing: summary versus scene for fiction, unsupported claims for essays, and buried points for articles. Every account gets one free deep read. After that, deep reads are sold in one-time packs, with no subscription.
