What is Ostgate?

Ostgate is a native macOS app for reaching Google Compute Engine VMs through Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP). Google's IAP Desktop does the same job on Windows only. You sign in with your Google account in your own browser and see the projects, Cloud SQL instances, Cloud Run services and VMs that account can already reach.

  • SSH terminal tabs over IAP. Your key is generated in the Mac's Secure Enclave and published for you through OS Login or instance metadata. Appliances without OS Login can use a password or your own key file.
  • Remote Desktop to Windows VMs in a tab: clipboard sync, a Mac folder shared as a Windows drive, a desktop that resizes with the window, Set Windows Password, and Type Clipboard Text.
  • An SFTP file browser with drag and drop. Whole folders upload in one go, and folders or several files download as one ZIP.
  • Tunnels to 127.0.0.1 for any port, with presets for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Redis and HTTP. Local ports stay the same between runs, ports below 1024 such as 443 or 22 work too, and tunnels reconnect after Wi-Fi drops and sleep.
  • Forwards through a VM to internal load balancers and private databases, Cloud SQL private IP through one of your VMs, and internal-only Cloud Run services in your browser.
  • One click adds an SSH config block, so ssh, scp and IDEs reach INSTANCE.ZONE.PROJECT.gcp from Terminal, even with Ostgate closed.
  • Several Google accounts side by side. When a connection fails, Connection Doctor names the missing IAM role or firewall rule and gives you a command to fix it.

The app talks to Google directly as you. Tokens stay in the macOS Keychain, no Ostgate server sits in the connection path, there is no telemetry, and gcloud is not needed. Not affiliated with Google.

Try it free for 7 days on any Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 26.3 or later, with no sign-up and no card. After that, a licence costs $79 a year or $9 a month for one person (two Macs), or $129 per user a year for companies.
