OpenSave is a free, open-source, peer-to-peer game save synchronization and backup app that brings a Steam Cloud-like experience to games that don't have Steam Cloud.
OpenSave automatically detects game saves, watches them for changes, creates versioned snapshots, and synchronizes them between Windows, Linux, macOS, and Steam Deck. It works with Steam, GOG, Epic, emulators, and other game installations.
Automatic Save Detection & Sync
OpenSave scans your system for known game save locations and can detect thousands of games using the Ludusavi save-path database. You can also manually add any folder or file.
Once a game is tracked, OpenSave automatically detects changes and syncs them between paired devices. Devices can communicate over your local network or through the OpenSave relay for internet synchronization, without port forwarding or an account.
Version History & Recovery
OpenSave keeps versioned snapshots of your saves, allowing you to:
- Browse previous versions
- Roll back saves
- Restore individual files
- Create branches for different playthroughs
- Keep historical save states
- Export or archive snapshots
This provides a Git-like history for game saves, helping recover from accidental changes or unwanted progress.
Conflict Detection
When two devices change the same save independently, OpenSave detects the conflict instead of silently overwriting progress. You can keep the local version, remote version, or preserve both as separate branches.
Cross-Platform & Steam Deck
OpenSave supports Windows, Linux, macOS, and Steam Deck/SteamOS. It lets you move between a desktop PC, laptop, and Steam Deck without manually copying saves.
It can also match the same game across devices using Steam App IDs, while allowing manual pairing when needed.
Optional Cloud Backup
Peer-to-peer synchronization does not require cloud storage, but OpenSave can optionally back up snapshots to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, WebDAV, local folders, NAS storage, or webhooks.
CLI & Automation
OpenSave includes a full CLI for scanning, tracking, pairing, syncing, snapshots, rollback, conflict resolution, cloud backup, background services, scripting, and automation.
Privacy
OpenSave requires no account, subscription, or telemetry. Your saves remain on your devices. Internet synchronization can use the project relay, which routes data between paired devices rather than acting as a save-storage service. Relays can also be self-hosted.
Other Features
- Sync multiple save folders for one game
- File exclusion rules
- Changed-data/block-level transfer to reduce unnecessary transfers
- In-app updates
- Native cross-platform Go application
- Support for non-Steam and non-standard game installations, including repackaged installations
OpenSave is designed for gamers who want automatic save synchronization, backup, and version history without depending on Steam Cloud or manually moving save files.
