My number one choice among free DNS providers. There's a great selection of settings, and I'm particularly pleased with the range of filter lists available. The control interface is remarkably user-friendly.

What is NextDNS?
NextDNS CLI is a DNS53 to DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) proxy with advanced capabilities to get the most out of the NextDNS service. Although the most advanced features will only work with NextDNS, this program can work as a client for any DoH provider or a mix of NextDNS + another DNS (split horizon).
The CLI is mostly aimed at routers and UNIX based systems, but it is also a great client for windows and macOS for people who prefer a fully open-source clients and don't mind the lack of GUI.

Comments and Reviews
Probably the coolest DNS- and adblocking related thing I've come across, works really well in practice.

I have been very satisfied with the service. It is easy to manage, Very well explained how to get started and good filters. It really has protected me from malicious links phishing links. A great solution to upscale your digital privacy and cyber security. Take back control on your internet traffic.
I don't mind ads, I really don't, as they support the sites that we consume. But what I do mind is that they track you and create profiles, when it's not needed.
NextDNS is brilliant as your firewall to protect you from all kind of online threats and trackers. And there's plenty of blocklists to go through to really fine-tune your experience.
I found it very straight forward and easy to set up on my family's devices. Compared to 1.1.1.1, I found latency NextDNS much better.
While an account is not necessary, it's very handy if you want to save settings and manage multiple devices. Plus, that limit of 300,000 queries per month is not bad at all for a free plan.
As a disclaimer, I am happily paying for an annual plan. Now I feel much safer and secure while browsing the web.
EDIT: Correcting some typos
NextDNS limits the Free tier to 300,000 queries / month. The Pro tier allows unlimited queries, and it costs $1.99 / month. NextDNS can work as parental control software by blocking DNS queries, but does not block offline games and apps.

blocks trackers and ads. protects you from connecting to malicious websites. has option for allowlist and denylist. can be used as a parental control tool. free tier is efficient as monthly queries hardly gets close to the limit of 300,000, even with multiple devices.
