Free, open-source writing app for novelists and screenwriters: free-form canvas, story bible, manuscript and screenplay in one place.

An open canvas for every idea you have
Characters, places, scenes, plots, themes, questions, images, links: every idea becomes a card, placed wherever you like. Draw a thread from one card to another and name it, “wants to eat her”, “takes place at”. The mess of the beginning becomes an ordered world.

Write your novel, page after page
The whole book scrolls as one, on book-sized pages: indents, justified text, a drop cap at each chapter opening. Click a passage to edit it in place.

A five-part story bible that fills itself in
Every card becomes an entry, filed in the right part: Presentation, Characters, World, Structure, and For you (questions, loose ideas, sources, private notes). Nothing to copy over: the bible updates whenever the canvas changes.

Screenwriting software in standard format
Six elements with standard indents, all from the keyboard: Tab changes the type, Enter moves to the next logical element. A line starting with “int.” becomes a scene heading.

What is MondoWrite?

MondoWrite is a free and open-source writing app for novelists and screenwriters, built by a published novelist and award-winning short film director who wanted one tool for the whole journey, from scattered ideas to a finished draft.

Start by dropping your ideas on a free-form canvas as cards. Organise characters, places and storylines in a story bible. Then write your novel manuscript or your screenplay, with proper screenplay formatting and an outline view.
