ModusBill is web-based billing software built for law firms and accounting firms. It records time, flat fees and expenses against matters or engagements and turns them into invoices that clients can pay online through a secure link, with no portal account needed.
For law firms, ModusBill includes IOLTA trust accounting. Client ledgers can't go negative, the audit trail can't be edited, and trust accounts reconcile three ways against the bank statement every month. Earned fees can be transferred from a client's retainer onto an invoice, and invoices can be exported in LEDES 1998B format for insurers and corporate clients.
For accounting firms, ModusBill bills recurring charges such as monthly bookkeeping fees on a schedule. A two-way QuickBooks Online connection keeps invoices, customers and payments in sync between both systems.
Both versions include time tracking, editable billable hours (the original entry is kept), online payments through Stripe or PlaceToPay that post back to the invoice automatically, A/R aging reports, data imports from other billing systems, and user roles. The app is fully bilingual: each user works in English or Spanish, and each client is invoiced in their own language.
Pricing is per user per month. Every plan includes every feature, and the per-seat price drops as the firm grows. A 30-day free trial is available, with no setup fee.
If AlternativeTo flags the short version as too long, the trimmed version is: "Billing software for law and accounting firms with time tracking, IOLTA trust accounting, LEDES export, QuickBooks sync and online payments."
