I believe many of these apps and sites will not survive the competitive marketplace, and a lot of people are leaving meetup since its acquisition by WeWork.

One really good sports specific alternative is OpenSports (www.opensports.net ), a recreational sports platform gaining a lot of love from recreational sports organizers and players, as it is the "Meetup for Sports".

They have a very connected community of soccer and volleyball players in a few different locations, and organizers love the new Groups feature, allowing them to communicate with all the regulars in one place. Super cool!
