What is MDZip Studio?

MDZip Studio is a free, open-source Markdown editor for Windows and Linux, and the reference app for the MDZip format. It saves a document together with its images in one file, so you can email, upload or archive it without the pictures going missing. Plain Markdown files open too.

MDZip is an open format: the same files open in the MDZip extension for VS Code, the MDZip plugin for Obsidian, a free web editor, any app built on the free MDZip libraries, and any ZIP tool.

Write in source, preview or split view, with a live preview as you type. Paste or drag in an image and it's stored inside the document. Mermaid diagrams, highlighted code, footnotes and task lists all render. Print or save to PDF, or copy the document as formatted text, images included, for Word or email. Large documents with thousands of images open in seconds, and remote images load only when you allow them. On Windows, .mdz files open with a double-click and preview in File Explorer, and a portable version runs without installing.

MDZip Studio is deliberately simple: one document per window, no knowledge base, no account, no cloud. Your files stay on your computer.
