    It's a fine alternative. It's paid and proprietary, but has ample support and reliable software. If data privacy is an issue stick with mattermost, rocket.chat or some other software. Weirdly enough, mattermost isn't listed as an alternative to slack even though it should be.

    Zulip does threaded conversations right, requiring every message to be in a thread and threads to be named. Like Mattermost, Zulip is also open source and can be self-hosted, but they also provide hosting, and for open source projects and research groups this hosting is free.

    Zulip is plagued with bugs, incompletenesses and annoyances, creating a ton of friction in everyday work. It doesn't matter how open you are when it's so much harder to work with than competitors.
