What is Kopano?
Kopano puts an email, video meetings, calendaring, and file sharing solution within one single interface.
Kopano helps you work smarter with people within and outside your organization. A single interface gives you email, contacts, advanced calendaring, file sharing, web meetings and more.
Web meetings take advantage of high-quality audio, video, chat and presentation tools. You get instant communication whether or not your co-workers use Kopano themselves.
Kopano is built on open source. That means clarity about what you’re getting, easy integration, and a transparent business model.
Kopano gives you flexible control of your data. Keep it either on-premises or in the cloud. Use our S/MIME add-on to focus on the identity of the sender and the privacy of your email.
We’ve made Kopano instantly familiar to anyone who has used an office suite before. All our productivity tools match the best available for functionality and ease of use. And with our integrated interface they work seamlessly together.
Kopano works on mobile as well. Push synchronization means you are always up to date whether you are in the office or on the road.
Please note that there's a paid-only offering on Kopano.com, which basically covers a Kopano instance managed by the team who mainly contributed in creating this Open Source software; there's also a self-host and community-supported solution available at https://kopano.io/ : 100% Open Source (AGPLv3). So it's not correct to say that Kopano is presently "Freemium": it's either a paid SaaS or a Free self-hosted solution.
Kopano (formerly Zarafa) has also been the main incubator for Z-push, the FOSS implementation of the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync often used in many Open-source projects.

Said about Kopano as an alternative
I tried a lot of MS alternatives, OX, Zimbra, Zentyal, but what fits most with Outlook Sync was the new Kopano, it's more flexible. You can use the web app or desktop app too.
OpenSource, better to maintain, "not Microsoft"
Scalable, open source with a great UX and it has all the features I need

A quick tip: If you like to test and use Kopano instantly, install it for free as a ready-to-use virtual machine image via Univention's App Catalog. This image contains the app itself and a UCS runtime environment. Apart from being quickly installed and free, you also get regular updates for the whole stack.
