What is Keyameleon?

Keyameleon is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app that gives each physical keyboard its own input source. Assign a layout to every keyboard once, and Keyameleon switches to it automatically as soon as you start typing on that keyboard. A US MacBook keyboard and an Italian external keyboard, or a QWERTY and a Dvorak keyboard, can be used side by side without switching layouts by hand.

It works with the built-in keyboard and with USB and Bluetooth keyboards, and remembers assignments across disconnects and restarts. You can rename keyboards and ignore devices that macOS reports as keyboards, such as a mouse with shortcut keys. A guided setup takes care of the Input Monitoring permission.

Keyameleon is monitor-only. It uses Apple's CoreHID framework to see which keyboard a key came from, never changes keystrokes, and sends no analytics. The only network requests are update checks you approve. Requires macOS 26 or later.
