The free, open-source alternative to Kahoot, Mentimeter & AhaSlides. Run live quizzes, polls, word clouds & slides with no paywalls or player caps.
Huddle helps anyone hosting a community event run live quizzes, polls, slides, word clouds, and more from a single platform.
So, what problem was I trying to solve?
Recently, while planning a quiz and polls for an event, we looked at several existing platforms such as Kahoot, Mentimeter, and Ahaslides.
There are plenty of great options available, but most of them come with some or other limitations in their free tiers, like:
👥 Participant limits (10-20 Max)
📊 Limited quizzes and polls (5-15 slides Max)
🎨 Forced branding (still okay)
🎥 Limited media support and customization
🔒 Restrictions on how you can use the platform and forced ads.
And to get around these limitations, most platforms push you towards expensive subscription plans.
So I thought: why not build an open-source alternative?
With the help of AI, I was able to build and iterate on the platform much faster than I normally would.
The goal is to make Huddle something that anyone can use for their events, while also allowing organisations and communities to self-host it on their own infrastructure. With just a simple docker-compose up, and all set.
What can you do with Huddle? You can currently:
🧠 Host live quizzes
📊 Create polls
☁️ Create word clouds
🖥️ Present slides
⚡ Collect responses live or wait for responses
🏆 Show or hide leaderboards
🎨 Customize themes, colours and branding
🖼️ Add images
🎬 Add videos
▶️ Embed YouTube videos
📱 Run interactive sessions for your community
🔓 Self-host the entire platform
And there is a lot more I want to add.
The bigger idea is simple: community events shouldn't need expensive proprietary tools for basic interactive activities.
So, go check out Huddle, try it out, break it, and let me know what you think.
