It takes time to learn as it is a very comprehensive software. The Apprentice version is free if you are going to use it for learning purposes. Most of the time you need basic visual processing algorithms, math, basic physics and some programming knowledge to be able to use it. But you can also use basic nodes without going too deep. Remember, you are dealing with a complex calculator :D
Nothing better exists, that piece of programming art can create more than even creative smart person imagination.
I agree, the nodes and programming might be a steep curve for newcommers but when you pass that curve its a hard to beat tool.

Houdini is definitely the best 3D package. Very interesting for VFX artists.
