      TuxGuitar vs Guitar Pro
      pros, cons and recent comments
TuxGuitar is to Guitar Pro as WordPad is to Word. It's not quite the same, but it's got all of the essential features, is open source, and is free.

It is a fantastic light-weight tab maker. The interface can be one-handed once you get familiar. But I think it's no longer supported or updated (as of 2019). Boo!

I've used Tux guitar for several years now and wrote some song ideas, added chords and it worked just great. Had one problem, the program crashed a couple times.

It is all-round high quality music score editor with extended possibilities of editing any type of tab for any type of fretted instruments from renaissance lute to modern guitar. And much more. The basic understanding of standard note notation is essential though.

MuseScore is not specific for the guitar or other fretted instruments.
