Skype is similar too.
Since I did not see MightyCall as a plausible alternative to Google Voice, I thought I'd share here. I use MightyCall for my small business and it allows me to stand out as a professional business with a dedicated phone number, as well as the ability to manage all my customer inquires straight from my smartphone on their app! Love it, I suggest checking them out.

I have added MightyCall as alternative to Google Voice, but you could add it yourself clicking on Add new application on startpage :)

Ahh, thank you! Now I know how to add another alternative. I appreciate it.

If you've had enough of Google and are technically inclined, you might try using Twilio to "roll your own" Google Voice.
For older folks who only use their inbox and nothing else.
Using google voice straight from Gmail to talk internationally (at a decent rate too) is very convenient, and it’s super easy to use.
Commercialized privacy raping.
Just say no.
Calls are routed THROUGH google. You, me, and Google hear the whole conversation
