While basic and offering limited control, it still provides a simple and easy way to create a website. Also allows you to use a custom domain that you own for your Google Sites website and registering this domain with your site is free (something that wordpress.com charges for).

Google Takeout allows you to download all your site data. From the website: "The downloaded site will not be styled and will not include the chrome and is completely unstyled, but will contain all of the content included in the site."
